I'm on nitrofurantoin for a urinary tract infection and I will still be on it on the wedding day. My little sister is getting married and even though I don't plan on drinking much, I would still like to raise a toast to them with some champagne. But I might need to make an exception next week. I generally follow the rule of not combining antibiotics with alcohol. Using them together is going to put immense pressure on your liver.

Antibiotics in general wear out the liver and so does alcohol. But I think it will be better if you don't. I understand you want to enjoy some alcohol on your sister's big day.

If you miss a dose, the medicine will not work as well. If you are planning on missing a dose so that you can reduce the likelihood of complications, that's a bad idea. I imagine the higher the dose and the longer you take it, the higher the risks will be when you also drink alcohol. But I haven't heard of that happening with nitrofurantoin. My friend had a drink while taking the antibiotic metronidazole once and she did have bad side effects. I think that nitrofurantoin is one of the better antibiotics that is not as dangerous when combined with alcohol. I didn't have any side effects or any problems. When I was on nitrofurantoin, I did have one beer on two separate occasions. This is just my opinion so please don't make a decision based on this alone.
